As I write this, we just experienced another time change. Yesterday we went from Daylight Saving Time to Standard Time. At first glance the logic seems sound, you get more daylight hours in the evening to do important things like study bugs. You can laugh at that because it's funny but that's the very reason why an entomologist named George Hudson proposed the idea. Believe it or not, that wasn't a very big sell for most people. However that changed during the Great War (also known as World War One) when nations were desperate to save fuel.
It makes sense to me that you would want more daylight and that especially during the time of lights that literally burned, you would save fuel by not needing to use them. What makes no sense to me is why you would just do that during the summer when you have more light anyway and then stop doing it in the winter. What is the logic there? "We have less daylight now so no reason to keep having more of it in the evening." Huh? I have questions that could probably only be answered by dead politicians. As much as the living ones lie, I can't imagine what those conversations would be like.
Every year when the time either "springs forward" or "falls back" I go into a pointless rage. "Why do we still do this?" I scream at the wind; I rant on the book of face, and to any unlucky person near me. I feel off for about a week and lament how much earlier it gets dark. I don't know anyone who likes the time change just those who don't mind it. What's wrong with those people? I don't know what drives me more mad, the thought of someone thinking it's a good idea or someone who doesn't care about the crazy and unnecessary throttling of everybody's schedule. Well except for the people of Arizona and Hawaii. Twice a year I find myself asking if I would be okay with 110 degree summers or unaffordable homes. The answer is no but I keep asking anyway.
It's about time for me to wrap this up. (See what I did there?) I beg any future or current politician or even person of influence who reads this post. Have pity on me and the at least dozens like me who loath time change with the passion of a thousand suns and just stop it. Please. We won't miss it at all, I promise.
